About the Course

Sleep complaints are common in mental health care. Most therapists recommend sleep hygiene or refer for a sleep study, both of which are appropriate in some cases and profoundly unhelpful in others. This presentation will educate clinicians about the biology of sleep, highlight factors that interfere with sleep, and give an overview of sleep disorders and how they are treated. Participants will walk away with a solid foundation of knowledge from which to assess and make appropriate recommendations for their clients with sleep complaints. You'll have access to the course for one year from date of purchase. Course Learning Objectives 1. Participants will examine the two-process model of sleep (Process S and Process C) to draw connections among ideas regarding how sleep drive and circadian rhythms impact a client's overall sleep architecture. 2. Participants will differentiate the clinical presentations of insomnia, nightmares, circadian rhythm disorders, sleep apnea, and hypersomnia to accurately identify specific sleep disorders and make appropriate treatment recommendations. 3. Participants will implement evidence-based behavioral interventions for the different sleep disorders discussed. 4. Participants will compare and contrast the clinical applications of objective sleep measurement tools, such as polysomnography and actigraphy, to determine when a sleep study is medically necessary versus when it is not.

Meet Your Instructor

Hi, I'm Jessica, a social worker of almost twenty years. I got trained in CBT-I in 2022 and realized I had a lot of misunderstandings about my role in treating sleep disorders. I now specialize in sleep in my private practice and want to spread the word about what non-medical providers like me can do to help their clients with sleep disorders.
